It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
Hey everyone,
We have scheduled our first official show: Saturday June 28 at Java Joes/4th Street Theatre. The theatre space is perfect, there's plenty of room for 10-12 artists, the lighting is great, plus some furniture we can arrange to create a nice atmoshpere. We will be advertising the show as 6pm to midnight. Amy said we can get there at about 2:00 to set up. The first target date was the night before, but the theatre space was already rented, so we scheduled Saturday. This is during the DM Art Festival, so there will be lots of extra people in town, and Java Joe's is already a destination. It is going to be a success!!
Jon is going to find a musical act.
We are calling for a meeting next Wednesday, May 7, 6:30pm at Java Joe's for everyone who is planning on being in the show. Talking points:
- Cost of renting the space will be split up among us, but Jon and I will be paying Jake's part b/c he has worked so hard on the website.
- I will bring a couple of originals to the meeting on Wednesday and I will advise anyone who needs help figuring out how to display their work.
-My friend Monica is going to join our group and hopefully she will be there Wednesday. Monica has a background in gallery work and will assist anyone who needs help writing an artist statement.
-We will need to think of a name for the show ("Art-A-Holics present......) and we will need to get postcards printed up to distribute around town by the end of May. I will contact Big Red Q Quickprint about pricing and post the results. We will also need someone to design the layout. To keep cost down, we will go with black lettering/graphics on loud-colored cardstock. I will get these displayed at The Art Store, The Beauty Parlor, and Java Joe's. Everyone will need to think of other places to hand these out....businesses, bulletin boards, etc.
That's it for now. Let's do it!

Thank you Steve and Jon that is very nice of you. I plan on working on the site more today. I have been very busy the past few days. Do we know how much art we should bring?

We'll talk about that on Wednesday. It's going to depend on the size of the work and how many people commit to doing the show. But I would say, everyone should have at least 5 original works and an artist statement.
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
All right sounds good. We should make a list at the next meeting of everything we need to get done as a group and individually before June 28
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
Is Java Joes going to do any thing to collaborate with the show at all like food or wine tasting. I think the date for it is great. We can also make fliers and Im willing to use my laser printer or can use a kinchos. I think its 10 cents a piece if you print it yourself. Good job Jon and Steve. Are we still having the picnic this Sunday or not?
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
I think we still should do the Sunday thing just for fun its not something anyone has to do tho.
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
are we going to be looking for a sponsor to provide food? I also think one person singing folk music with a guitar would be nice for entertainment. I Java Joes could also do it as a Open House the same nite under New Ownership
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
should I go ahead and announce it on are myspace then again closer to the date. I know several that want to come to it.

No...we want to encourage people to spend money at Java Joe's on their refreshments. May talk to Amy more about "catering" something for us. .....Jon knows of some music acts that will be appropriate, it's just a matter of one of them being available. He can explain it better than I can.
Amy is going to list the show on Java Joe's website, and our postcards/flyers will be distributed there. Plus we're not going to use the outside entrance to the theatre, people will enter thru JJ's. She is very into this and is going to be a great supporter. This is a venue we can use again in the future.
Speaking of flyers, I talked to the owner of Big Red Q Quickprint, and if we use all black text and graphics, we can get 1,000 4.25"x5.5" postcards for a mere $45.00!

It's never too early to start telling people!
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
ok I will announce it to the Myspace site and I was wondering do we pay for the entertainment or are they willing to do it to get exposure.
Re: It's on! June 28 at Java Joe's!
Is this are first event? I might have a place that might be interested in having us hang some art in their business for a period of time.

I won't be able to attend the meeting Wednesday because I'm going to be in Washington, DC. I still want to participate in the show on June 28.

keep the music simple
I think we should keep the music real simple. Some thing that will not overpower the art show. maybe a person singing with an acoustic guitar and I'm sure there are a lot of people that would love to get some exposure by playing during the show. I would keep it a soft music. Thats just my opinion.
