Gateway Market
Here is the "skinny" on the Gateway Market show. Art-A-Holics will be the "entertainment" for Saturday, August 2 from 4-9 pm at 520 Market Street in West Des Moines in conjunction with their 3-day Grand Opening Festivities. It is just off of Mills Civic Parkway very near the Interstate. Directions can be found at http://www.gatewaymarket.com/village-of-ponderosa.cfm .
We can begin setting up around 2:30. Again, to add to our professionalism, we should have some way to display a few pieces of your work other than laying them flat on a table. Table top easels seemed to be an inexpensive idea that was discussed last night. Gateway Market will provide us with tables. I haven't seen the venue, but it will be in the cafe area.
We need to find a musician to play from 5-8 pm. Gateway Market will pay him/her $75 for their time, and said he could have a tip jar. Tim, would the same musician be interested in doing this? I request member's thoughts about each person showing art in the show to also donate $5 to the musician as sort of an "entry" fee for the show since Gateway isn't charging us anything. What does everyone think? Should it be more? I'm looking for ideas. Who would like to take charge of finding a musician for the three hours?
Gateway Market said that we could do our own advertising for the art event. He didn't feel it would take away from Gateway Market's Grand Opening Festivities. Again, I'm looking for ideas/thoughts about doing the post cards again. What are people's thoughts on this? Who wants to take the lead on this if we decide on this again?
Thor, once I get a commitment list of members doing this show, since you work near this location, would you be able to figure out the layout of the space and who will be where? Thank you.
Lastly, I need a yes or no from everyone if you will be doing the show. Could you please just reply to this post with your answer? Thank you!
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
I will put the information into the community calendars and help distribute the cards.

Put post in "Shows" area?
Moderator, can this be moved to the "Shows" area of the forum? Lets try to get away from putting everything in "General" and try to put things in the corresponding area, as to not confuse people.

Re: Gateway Market
I think this is the appropriate area to add this post. I wouldn't want to see important information be missed because someone didn't look in the "shows" folder because they were unaware there was a proposal meeting with a business. Also, there is time critical information, decisions, and arrangements that need done. Once the show is over, I think it should be moved out of the general area. I'm not at all trying to argue, nor do I disagree, but for this show, because of the fast approaching date, it is good to have the post where people are used to looking.
I would like to see topics that are older than a month be moved out of the general area into the "old posts" area so we can have current and pertinent information easily found.
Just my two cents.

Re: Gateway Market
Why do we have a "Shows" area if it is going straight from General, to Older Posts? Everyone is just posting everything in General, and there is nothing in "Shows' which would be the obvious place to go for Show information. Am I missing something? Isn't that logical and make sense? I just think we should utilitze the site properly. But whatever, I'm not the moderator.
Anyways, as for the Gateway Market Show I'm in. If Gateway is paying the musician, I don't see why we would be paying $5 fee towards them as well? I'm against that idea, seeing they're already getting compensated.

Re: Gateway Market
I'm in for the show. That makes a grand total of 2 so far.
Paying the musician comes from some feedback others had during our last show. I was just asking. Maybe under these circumstances where he/she is getting paid via the business, it could be a voluntary thing.

Re: Gateway Market
I will not be doing the Gateway Market thing, as I have some other commitments around that weekend. I'll dedicate my efforts towards the next "big" show.

The problem is that only Moderators can post new topics in the "Shows" area. I PMed Jake about it, so hopefully we'll get that changed.
Re: Gateway Market
As of now, here are the people who have confirmed doing the show at Gateway Market:
I hope a few more will be able to join us. Thanks to those of you who are active on the forum.
Jim said that he was going to work on getting postcards copied. I think he is looking at around 500 or so. I'll post more when I know more.
I posted in the "Shows" category about needing to find a musician. I'll put all new topics about the show in there.

Re: Gateway Market
I will be participating in the Gateway show, Brad. Your assumption was correct.
I stopped by the market last Friday. For any of you who have been to the MLK store, it is very similar. This new one has a pond out back with a beautiful patio and the cafe/dining area is much larger... probably twice the size total. As Chris explained, we can set up in any of the three divided areas depending on how many participants we have so they're pretty flexible. Unfortunately there is no wall space, so we will need to be free standing with our artwork.
The patrons there mostly seemed of the "suburban" type, but I still saw a decent mix of people... just not quite as extreme as the MLK location.

Re: Gateway Market
I am excited about the show. Im sure we will be using the shows area but I feel its important for everyone to see this. So I think this one is important to keep in general.
Postcards
I need to call a couple of places about postcards. If we are able to save a lot of money by cutting out ourselves I will. I'm good with scissors.

Re: Gateway Market
I don't know yet if I will be able to do this show. My kids are coming home a couple weeks early and I may have to change some plans. I will get back to you and let you know what's up.
musician lined up
Jim found a musician for Gateway Market. Thank you to those who were also working on this. I got a great contact through Reiman's Music for future use.
musician lined up
B. John Burns was playing at village bean co. he plays accoustic and keyboard and sings. Hes probably at least in his 50s. I think he is very good. His website is www.bjohnburns.com
New addition
Jenny Fickbohm will be joining us for our show at Gateway Market, so that will make seven of us. She is the art teacher where I work, and she has some awesome work in painting. She is also very interested in being a part of the September show, so that is also addresses the issue of having a new artist for our second show at Java Joes. She won't be able to attend meetings becasue she teaches classes at night.
